Remedial Massage and Stretch Therapy at MVP

Our remedial massage therapist is trained in both traditional remedial massage as well as Japanese Stretch Therapy. Through a thorough understanding of the human body, our therapist combines these massage techniques to ensure that you leave feeling refreshed and mobile.

What is Japanese Stretch Therapy?

Japanese Stretch Therapy (or Japanese Structural Muscle Release) is a whole body treatment, through the application of gentle, sustained manual pressure or stretching into all parts of the body. It is used to target areas of tightness, restriction or pain to improve movement, posture and wellbeing.

Japanese Stretch Therapy is a unique combination of Sotai (操体) movement therapy, Shiatsu (指圧), manual therapy, Kenbiki (腱引き) tendon adjustment therapy & remedial massage techniques.

Unlike other therapies, this is a clothed, dry skin treatment.  You will play a much more active role in the sessions.

Treatments aim to affect the neuro-musculoskeletal, circulatory, lymphatic, digestive, peripheral nervous and other systems to relieve abnormal pain & tension, support structural alignment, and facilitate the body's natural self-healing ability.

Benefits of Japanese Stretch Therapy

  • Reduce pain

  • Improve posture

  • Increased muscle flexibility

  • Improve joint movement

  • Enhance sport performance

Totonoῡ (整)

An old Japanese philosophy used to achieve balance. Simply put, you can not advance or improve until you have proper alignment, form, function and technique. It is from this simple understanding that we focus our treatments.

To achieve totonoῡ (整), we combine the Japanese Stretch Therapy with Modern Western Techniques.

The Perfect Combination…

  • Sotai (操体)

The underlying philosophy of Sotai is that the body will move towards a natural balance and away from pain. It promotes movement away from a painful position by working with the client’s breathing and using muscle energy techniques to help to ‘turn off’ a hyper-stimulated nervous system, which is often responsible for muscle contraction and imbalanced holding positions.

    Shiatsu (指圧)

Concentrated pressure using thumbs, fingers, elbows, and knees across energy pathways in the body (meridians).

    Kenbiki  (腱引き)

Kenbiki is a therapeutic technique aiming to improve blood circulation through determining which tendons (ken) are under tension, and then mobilising, or plucking (biki) them to correct the distortion. The entire procedure is very short, and is meant to yield quick results, not requiring consecutive treatments unless for a chronic problem. It is a firm technique, and as such can be somewhat uncomfortable, but the results are worth it. Our massage therapist will always check first before providing any firm treatments to ensure you are comfortable and able to tolerate the pressure.

  • Myofascial release techniques

Targeted release of connective tissue and muscle fascia.

    Neuromuscular massage therapy

Application of alternating levels of concentrated pressure to trigger points.

    Positional release massage therapy

Combining specific body movements with gentle muscle release to treat muscle spasm and chronic pain in the ligaments, tendons and joints.

    Muscle Energy Techniques

Muscle activation patterns to release tension in tight or sore body parts.

    Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation

Involving both stretching and contracting of muscle group to improve flexibility.

    Trigger point therapy

Sustained pressure to release muscle knots.

    Effleurage

Gliding strokes for relaxation and improving circulation.

    Petrissage

Kneading movements using hands, thumbs or fingers.

    Friction therapy

Circular pressure to break down scar tissue and adhesions.
