Men’s Heath Physiotherapy
Optimal pelvic floor function helps to support good bladder and bowel health in men. It also improves sexual function and can reduce pelvic pain. Men can experience many of the conditions that women report including bladder and bowel dysfunction, pelvic pain, and sexual dysfunction.
At MVP, our physiotherapist Emma has undergone further postgraduate training in this area, and is passionate about educating men on the importance of their pelvic health.

What to expect from a Men’s Heath assessment
Your initial consultation will take approximately 60 minutes, in which we will identify your main areas of concern and goals for treatment.
During the session, your Physiotherapist will ask you a variety of questions relating to your pelvic health and lifestyle. They may ask some more personal questions, such as bladder and bowel habits, sexual activity or history of pelvic pain. These questions are important as they give us a full understanding of your condition. Your Physiotherapist will check to make sure you are comfortable answering questions in relations to these topics.
Your Physiotherapist will discuss with you what they think the problem is, and outline what assessments may be appropriate.
Once you have been assessed, your physiotherapist will take the time to discuss your diagnosis and work with you to form a management plan to assist in your recovery.
FAQs
What assessment options are available?
At the clinic, we use real-time ultrasound to assess pelvic floor function. This can be used over the stomach (above the pubic bone) or over the perineum. Your Physiotherapist will discuss the pros and cons to each assessment so you can make an informed decision.
For some individuals, a digital rectal examination will be suggested. This involves placing a gloved finger into the back passage to assess pelvic floor muscle strength, endurance and coordination. This assessment provides us with more information about the tone of the pelvic floor muscles and how well they are able to relax. This assessment is performed by a trained professional physiotherapist who will ensure you feel comfortable and in control of your treatment.
Your Physiotherapist may ask you to complete other assessment measures such as bladder or bowel diaries to gain further information.
Is there an additional cost to having a pelvic floor assessment done?
No, all pelvic floor examinations are covered under the cost of our Initial Men’s Health Assessment. Rebates are available for applicable private health. If you are referred through a GP management plan, there will be a gap payment.
What should I wear to the session?
Please wear comfortable clothing which allows access to the body parts you are wanting assessed. Some assessments require partial undressing, for which we will ask your consent and provide you with towels to cover.
